The Gibsons of Scilly are a family of photographers spanning five generations. From John Gibson who acquired his first camera in the 1860s to present day.
The family have lived and worked in West Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly providing a continuous record of life and events in the islands.
Our archive consists of the orginal 12 x 10 glass wet plates used when photography
was in its infancy through all the mediums – smaller glass plates, cut film, roll film, 35mm and the present digital format.
Wherever you go in the islands you will see our pictures – from pub walls to historical information boards, from someone’s wedding photos to the postcards you buy.
The Gibson photographs are an integral part of Scilly and provide an important historical record for this unique place.
